Mary's Daily program
includes up to four sessions 30-90 minutes each, as best suits age of the students. Choose from programs below or work with Mary to formulate a program specific to the needs of your particular school. A 30-to-60 minute author presentation for students grades K-12, bringing to life an important segment of Western history though picture, artifact and story. I include a hands-on demonstration of historical mining artifacts, including a display of how miners worked before electricity and power drills. Students learn how I based my novel Fire in the Hole! on an actual dynamite explosion in 1899, how I conducted my historical research, and about the writing and publishing process. A question and answer period is included. Often I combine this program with a writing workshop.
The Mother Lode of Plot and How to Mine It A 30-to-60 minute writing workshop for grades 3-12. Students will flesh out a character and learn strategies for developing plot, setting scene and adding detail. They will practice writing and responding, and learn the importance of revision.
Winning Writing: Can't get past the it's all done syndrome? This 30-to-60 minute session offers techniques and processes to make revision easier for students. Mary will encourage students in making their writing the best it can be by leading them through a revision of a piece of their own work, teaching self-editing strategies and explaining how they can develop their own voice.
Standby for News! How do reporters decide what’s news? And how do they get it to the front page or your nightly news program? I presents students with a real world look behind the scenes and teach basic newswriting skills. Exercises will show students the difference between breaking stories, features and opinion columns.
