Celebrating Faith: Year-Round Activities for Catholic Families has great ideas for celebrating holidays and making seasons of the year special for your family.

My award-winning novel Fire in the Hole! is a gripping story based on true events in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Idaho at the end of the nineteenth century.  Named a Bank Street College Best Book of the Year, and a Notable Book in Social Studies, it is recommended for ages 10 to 14.  Click here for reviews.

Daughters of the Desert: Stories of Remarkable Women from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Traditions.  Early praise for this book calls it "bold, innovative and literary...." This ground-breaking collection of short stories brings to life the women—daring, brave, thoughtful, and wise—who played important and exciting roles in the early days of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. You may order direct from the publisher or from any bookstore. The book is a collection of eighteen stories suitable for all ages that I wrote with four other women.

EVERYDAY GRACE: A SPIRITUALITY COLUMN FOR FAMILIES

             Got Three Minutes?

By Mary Cronk Farrell  ©2007

Have you heard the one about the bishop and the egg-timer? One Monday morning the bishop went out and handed miniature egg-timers to people rushing for work. He hoped to challenge those scurrying past to “take three minutes of silence a day to transform their lives.”

True story. I meant to write about it when it happened in June, but I didn’t have time.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one.

When Anglican Bishop of Reading, England, Stephen Cottrell urged commuters to use the timers to keep track of three minutes to slow down and sit still, more than a few declined.
One said, “I don’t have time.”

          A Lenten Reflection

By Mary Cronk Farrell  ©2008

During Lent God calls us to a total change of heart. It's hard enough to reform one little habit, almost impossible to transform one's mindset to an entirely new way of thinking and acting. Notice there's not just one Lent in a lifetime; it comes around every year for a reason.

Traditionally, the Church recommends three practices to remind us we depend on God to help us grow and change. The Lenten practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving open our hearts and teach us compassion.
